A1 Engine Repair – Preparation Tips

The A1 test focuses on the diagnosis and repair of engine mechanical problems. ASE wants you to understand cylinder head and valve train service, engine block diagnosis and machining limits, and lubrication and cooling system repair, along with general engine diagnostic procedures.

Key Areas Covered:

• General Engine Diagnosis — Verifying customer concerns, road testing, abnormal noise diagnosis, and using service information effectively
• Cylinder Head and Valve Train Diagnosis and Repair — Valve train components, cylinder head warpage, valve guides and seats, and related measurements
• Engine Block Diagnosis and Repair — Cylinder block measurements, crankshaft and bearing service, pistons, rings, and related wear diagnosis
• Lubrication and Cooling Systems Diagnosis and Repair — Oil pump and pressure diagnosis, cooling system components, thermostats, and related leak diagnosis
