A8 Engine Performance – Preparation Tips

The A8 test focuses on the diagnosis and repair of engine performance issues. ASE wants you to understand how to diagnose drivability concerns, interpret scan data, test ignition and fuel systems, analyze exhaust emissions, and properly use diagnostic equipment to find root causes efficiently.

Key Areas Covered:

• General Engine Diagnosis — Drivability complaints, vacuum testing, compression testing, and cylinder leakage testing
• Ignition System — Primary and secondary ignition testing, spark plugs, coils, and ignition timing issues
• Fuel, Air Induction & Exhaust Systems — Fuel pressure testing, injectors, throttle bodies, intake manifold leaks, and exhaust restrictions
• Emissions Control Systems — EGR, EVAP, PCV, catalytic converters, and OBD-II monitor readiness
• Computerized Engine Controls — PCM operation, sensor testing (MAF, MAP, O2, CKP, CMP), actuators, and DTC diagnosis
• Scan Tool Diagnosis — Interpreting live data, freeze frame data, bidirectional controls, and monitor status
• Drivability & Performance — No-start, hard start, misfire, hesitation, surging, and poor fuel economy diagnosis
